MY FINAL PROJECT

The subject of my final project is; New York City subway. Everyday we take subway to go home, school, office or somewhere. Especially, in New York City, we cannot move anyway without train. I believe that New York City subway system is one of the most efficient people transports in the entire world.

The hot and dingy subway system of the 1970's has been completely renovated into a safe, convenient and comfortable mode of transportation between nearly all areas of New York City. Over 4.3 million people ride the subway system every day; over 1 billion people go through the turnstiles per year! While minor theft and homelessness still abound, the subway is a much better place than was predicted back in the financially troubled days of the city. But I think that antique style traces are still remaining everywhere in NYC subway station.

NYC subway is always my changeable subject for photography, because there are a lot of interesting stuff in subway; diversity of races, a look of people, entertainment, and sound of train, smell of station and deferent style of station design, and etc. but I know that it is very difficult to take picture in the subway because subway is moving and nobody like to be taken picture by unknown people.

I would like to show all of NYC subway station if possible, and take picture of each station’s features and design. It is very interesting and good for design study. And also, I hope to take underground entertainer such as African American dancing teams, and vocal artists, instrument players such as saxophone and drummer. And, it is also very interesting to take picture of people in the subway. There are a lot of people such as student, businessman, family, lovely couple, and arguing people who do not care about other people, and sleeping homeless on the settee of subway. Like journalist, I hope to take each people’s impression in the subway.

I will not have one specific time of day; I will most likely take the pictures whenever I can see extraordinary and ordinary scene according to circumstances in the subway. I think I cannot use flash of camera because I do not want to border other people’s nerves, but I will take them by stealth. Wish me luck!

Best Shot: Dining Table

This image was taken for Ad 2 project, which is about dishwashing gel “Dawn,” at Macy's in Long Islands. In the furniture collection, I found one of beautiful dining table. I turn around it to find proper lay-out for picture, and shot several pictures. I finally choose this lay-out; some dishes on the left and two wine glasses on the right side of the front. For the depth of field, the other dishes and wine glasses are setting in the distance, and some sofa and living room display are blurred in the backside of the table. I love this picture for Ad 2 and am looking for suitable headline for AD. :-)

Best Shot: Cedar Trees with Sky

I like this photo because of the composition of the sky line between trees and sky. The ruddy glow in the sky and the spreading dark trees make a sign of winter coming. This color and shapes make it very interesting photo, although the dark color branches of trees look like two dimensions or plane, the contrast with the sky make a depth of field in the photo.

Karl Blossfeldt’s Photography

I like this picture because of its composition of shapes and harmony. The curves of the shapes and lines make it beautiful graphic design elements. The composition, which he uses in this photo, turns it to be a two dimensional object because of the front view that he used to take it. And it is very interesting because it has a lot of movement as others in his photography.

This extraordinary photo The Cup’ was taken by Jason Schwartzman. The photographer combined the photo of street scene with a distorted cup, and with another photo of a man who sat on a raised spot. Because of the cup on the street and blurred foot of a woman, the man is rather short. It seemed that the man is isolated with our society and represents a sense of alienation.

It is obvious that this kind of photo never fail to catch the viewer’s eyes because of extraordinary scene that never happen as usual. So, the client wants uncommon, exceptional, and non-realistic images to catch their costumers’ attention.

JOEL MEYEROWITZ PHOTO : SKY/BAY

It is a beautiful picture because its setting is perfect; the color of sunset is very warm but gloomy and mysterious, and those lights reflect to the bay. The distant horizon appears with those moods and very powerfully. Although this photo only has some clouds on the sky and the bay, the light creates a lot of stories between them. Joel Meyerowitz definitely took it with a lot of patience because the light has suddenly changed a lot of time and it makes different moods each times. He may tries to capture the capricious nature that can reveal itself through mood, light, mist, seaweed, wind, or the endless vortices of water in its dialogue with sand.

Sunset on Queens Borough Plaza 6:35 pm

After thunder sudden shower, I was standing Queens Borough plaza station of seven line around 6:35 pm. When the skyline of Manhattan seems to ready to show us shiny city’s lights, the dark and cold sky is changed to pinkish warm color because of the reflection of the sunset. I like this mood, color tones, and contrast of the dark platform of the station with the sky.

My assigned subject is “child”. Child is looking for something exciting stuffs with a full of curiosity, when they are walking on the street with their parent. Although their parent usually ignores it, they cannot look away from a feeding pigeon, walking dog, running squirrel, and beautiful flower on the street. The very young child approaches life with open-minded curiosity to anything. They are also looking from a low angle at the world; it is different angle with adults.

I went to Cadman Plaza to take some pictures for the assignment on last Saturday that assigned subject is “Child”. It was little cloudy and sunny day. I walked and took some pictures like usual but I found there were something new. I thought I am lucky because there opened the farmer’s market on the street. Like child, I excitingly pressed shutter again and again; colorful fruits, tomatoes, vegetables, house baked breads, and the exciting face of people just like me.

First picture is the side of benches on the street. I tried to find new angle with child’s curiosity and exciting tempo. I like it so much because of unique angle, the direction of the benches, and repetition of the circular knobs.

And, the other is the cup of hot peppers on the table that a farmer set them up to sell. In the picture I found some simplicity of the farmer and the taste of peppers, and color that I like.
